The research conducted in the INSPIRE lab focuses on the role of the spine musculature in the development and recurrence of neck & low back pain. We use a variety of imaging techniques to examine muscle morphology and function in relation to various spinal pathologies.
Objectives Area of Focus
Dr. Fortin's research program aims to improve the understanding, prevention, diagnostic and management of common and chronic spinal disorders. Using comprehensive
approaches and innovative imaging techniques, Dr. Fortin's innovative research program aims to:
1) Establish the relationship between lumbar and cervical muscle morphology and function
2) Identify and analyze the difference in paraspinal muscle morphology and function between individuals with and
without lower back pain
3) Investigate the effects of different therapeutic modalities
and exercise programs on paraspinal muscle health,
disability and psychological factors, and
4) Work towards the standardization and automatization of paraspinal muscle
morphometry and composition imaging measurements.
Low back pain, cervical myelopathy, disc herniation, spinal stenosis, magnetic resonance imaging, paraspinal muscle composition, ultrasound, shear-wave elastography, rehabilitation, exercise therapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, orthopedic and sports medicine.
